Getting feedback is the best way to improve as a substitute teacher. We take a lot of pride in ensuring our educators feel prepared when they enter the classroom and in optimizing opportunities for improvement.
We’ve developed a performance management process for Scoot substitutes to allow for feedback and coaching. Our dedicated consultants take daily assessments from schools and communicate both positive and constructive feedback.
Educators discuss feedback with their consultant to learn methods and tactics to utilize next time they are in the classroom.
A good substitute teacher takes criticism well.
A great substitute teacher takes criticism, learns from it, and grows from it. Being reflective of one’s teaching practice and showing a desire to improve is essential!
This idea is known as a growth mindset.
Substitutes who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset. They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset (those who believe their talents are innate gifts).
Every substitute we employ understands this idea and sees “failures” as an opportunity to grow, not a limitation of their abilities.
Our performance management process consists of 3 parts.
A substitute’s performance is assessed daily through feedback given by school administrators.
Administrators contribute feedback through our app, a direct call to our office, or via email to their Scoot consultant.
Schools are encouraged to provide as much information as possible so we are able to pass it on to the educator in a constructive manner. From this information, schools build a preferred list for educators as well as a non-preferred list.
We speak frequently, if not daily, with our substitutes in the field, and substitutes receive feedback as soon as Scoot learns of it!
Depending on the type, Scoot communicates feedback via a quick phone call, a text, or an email.
If a substitute’s assignment had challenges and a school administrator provided constructive feedback, we setup a phonecall with the educator and their Scoot consultant.
The purpose of the conversation is to:
If any constructive feedback violates the terms of the Substitute Handbook, then the educator is subject to disciplinary action and even termination of employment.
We understand that there are always two sides to a story, so we continuously share feedback from educators with schools about how they can better support substitutes.
