One of the most rewarding career decisions you can make is to be a substitute teacher. Substitute teaching is perfect if you want to:
- Positively impact students’ lives
- Grow in leadership and interpersonal skills
- Earn some extra money
So how do you start? Well, you could take the time to learn your local school district’s requirements for subs. Then, start an application for each district you want to teach at.
The hitch is that applying gets complicated when requirements and application processes differ by district.
We’ve summarized the general steps to become a Florida substitute teacher in this blog post.
But if you’re curious about becoming a substitute teacher in Florida the easy way, this is the guide for you.
Why sub with a staffing company like Scoot Education?

What if I only have a high school diploma?
No problem! Fortunately, you don’t need a Bachelor’s degree to become a substitute teacher in Florida. In most Florida school districts, all you need is a high school diploma to work as a substitute teacher.
Scoot Education doesn’t require Florida subs to have a Bachelor’s degree either.
Step 2: Go through a phone screen
Next, schedule a quick phone call with one of our consultants.
The phone screen is just a 15-minute call to get to know you. It is NOT the formal interview that takes place later. We’ll ask about:
- What you’re looking for
- Where you’re located
- Permits or credentials you might have
After hearing your answers, we’ll let you know the kind of substitute job opportunities we have available that fits your needs.
Step 3: Complete a virtual interview
If we seem to be a good fit, you can schedule time for a virtual interview.
Before the interview
To streamline the interview process, please upload proof of your teaching credentials to Fountain IF you have any. These may be:
- A teaching certificate issued by the Florida Department of Education (Temporary or Professional). You can check your status online.
- A Statement of Eligibility issued by the Florida Department of Education
- Proof of completion of a substitute teacher course or workshop
What’s the virtual interview like?
The interview will be 30 to 45 minutes long over video call.
We’ll ask you about your ideal commute time, preferences for grade levels, and more to make sure that you only get assignments that suit your needs!
Step 4: Upload official documents
After your stellar interview, your consultant will email you to submit the following documents:
- Identification documents (ID, SSN, etc.)
- Three references including at least one supervisor
- Payroll information
Submit your fingerprints at a LiveScan location
Pass a background check, following the steps below:
- Complete a background authorization form (we provide this form in Fountain)
- Get your fingerprinting done at a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved LiveScan location
Scoot will reimburse you up to $90 for the LiveScan in your first paycheck!
Here are FDLE approved LiveScan locations in the counties Scoot Education serves:
Complete 3 mandatory trainings
The last step is to complete three short training courses and quizzes on the following topics:
- Bloodborne pathogens
- Mandated reported
- Sexual harassment
Step 5: Receive your offer letter!
Once you’ve completed all the steps and gotten approved, you’ll receive your offer letter in your email inbox. Then, we’ll help you get set up as a Scoot employee in our online systems.
