California’s UTK

California’s UTK

Universal Transitional Kindergarten was passed with the vision to expand equitable access to quality early learning experiences for children of all backgrounds. But this comes with its challenges:

  1. Difficulty meeting the new 1:10 adult-to-student ratios
  2. Shortage of TK-qualified educators who understand this age group
  3. Lack of a pathway to become TK teachers

Meet 10:1 TK ratios, grow your teacher pipeline

Scoot offers short-term and long-term solutions to help districts navigate TK staffing right now while building a sustainable solution for the future.

  • TK Paras & Aides
  • TK Teachers in Training

TK Paras & Aides

  • 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday to Friday support from your Scoot consultant
  • No advance payment or subscription needed
  • Discounted rates and TK-specific training for extended commitments

Many of our paras bring the right experience for 4-year-olds like toileting support, behavior management, and early childhood development understanding. They can help you meet the required 10:1 student-to-adult ratios in your TK classrooms.

If you request long-term placements, then we’ll invest in those educators by having them complete our TK Fundamentals training session, which covers developmentally appropriate practice, play-based learning, and classroom management for 4-5 year olds.

TK Teachers in Training

  • Workforce development approach to building the teacher pipeline
  • Full-time TK aide coverage during Fellow training
  • Hirable teachers built within your community

Through our TeachStart program, we recruit local candidates who already have early childhood education (ECE) experience and support them in earning their Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.

These Fellows can work as your full-time TK aides while completing their credentialing.

At the end of the program, you can hire the newly credentialed teachers for your TK classrooms.

How TeachStart Opened Doors for an Aspiring ECE Educator

After extensive volunteering and working in preschool environments, Allison faced the classic dilemma of becoming a credentialed teacher. Becoming a lead requires credits, which is schooling she didn’t have either funds or time to pursue. And most aide positions were part-time without a livable salary.

She was ready to leave education entirely for event planning – until she discovered TeachStart.

Scoot success stories

TK Dual Coverage

The Challenge
One charter network faced vacant TK classrooms that needed more than just coverage. They needed educators who understood TK’s unique blend of play-based learning and academic readiness. Standard substitutes weren’t cutting it.

The Scoot Solution
We took time to understand what each campus needed, then matched educators with relevant TK experience from K-12 para backgrounds to small group instruction skills. When one school needed both a teacher and aide, we provided a complete classroom team through our substitute services and TeachStart, a teacher credentialing program.

The Growth
Over two school years, we’ve covered ~100 TK classroom days by matching the right people to the right environments. Our partner was able to get consistent coverage from educators who actually want to be there.

High-Volume Para Staffing

The Challenge
This California unified school district requested a cohort of 35 paraprofessionals in summer, weeks before the school year began, to cover unexpected gaps in faculty staffing.

The Scoot Solution
We fulfilled the entire request by the first day of school.

The Growth
Redlands USD has repeatedly expanded their para pool with Scoot.

Since then, we successfully grew their pool to 55 educators by October and placed more than 90 paras over our two year partnership.
