Firstline Schools – Arthur Ashe Charter School

The challenge

Firstline Schools, a non-profit organization managing a network of public charter schools, faced critical staffing gaps in two areas:

• ESL support: A large population of Spanish-speaking students required an educator with language skills.
• Special Education: Needed a paraeducator for high-needs students.

Firstline Schools initially sought Scoot’s TeachStart program for building subs and a pathway to hire educators who fit each of their campus’ culture.

Customized approach

Scoot New Orleans delivered customized staffing results:

• ESL placement: Hired Kristen A., a TeachStart Fellow with Spanish-speaking background, to meet ESL needs
• SPED support & temp-to-perm: Placed Mercedes W. in a long-term paraeducator role
  • After just one week, Mercedes proved to be such an exceptional educator that the campus wanted to hire her ASAP. We encouraged completing a longer trial period before they finally hired her after two semesters.
• Flexibility for family needs: When a Fellow needed to drop out, Scoot Consultants quickly sourced Josephine M. from the January cohort
  • We knew Josephine was the right fit and closely worked with the Firstline campus to communicate her adjusted schedule.
• Proactive planning: Monthly check-ins with Firstline’s Talent Team to anticipate needs and hire ahead of time
